Stilbaai Medies – Still Bay Family Doctors & Therapists

Stilbaai Medies is a private general medical practice. Licensed to provide general health care to locals, visitors as well as holiday makers in Still Bay and surrounding areas.

Their consulting rooms are in a new building in the Fynbos Lifestyle Estate which is situated opposite the entrance of the CareWell Subacute Hospital in Still Bay West. The building consists of two consulting rooms for the doctors as well as a room for the physiotherapist. There is also a reception area, a bathroom (disabled friendly) and a treatment room where the nurse meets patients before their consultation.

Services at Stilbaai Medies

This medical practice has a qualified sister assisting the doctors with various medical procedures. She takes the patient through a pre-consultation procedure in the treatment room, noting the results on the patient’s electronic health record. She typically measures the blood pressure, weighs the patient, takes the temperature and also asks for a urine sample if necessary. The results are thus immediately available for the doctor to peruse by the time the doctor sees the patient.

Minor procedures that are done in the treatment room includes stitching of wounds, excision of minor skin lesions, diathermy, limb casts, ECG’s, as well as nebulization.

Although they can handle most of the general cases, some of the patients will obviously need help from specialists. In those cases, they have a good referral relationship with specialists in the Mosselbay, George and also Knysna areas.

Furthermore, these general practitioners do blood tests as well as any other tests necessary for identifying certain diseases. Their practice is opposite the CareWell Sub-acute Hospital where there is an X-ray facility.

Dr Karlien van Zyl

She studied at the University of Pretoria where she has successfully completed the MBChB degree in 1998. Thereafter her internship was done at Witbank hospital and the community service at Evander hospital. After these two years she spent a year working in the United Kingdom in two Nuffield private hospitals as resident medical officer.

After her return to South Africa, she worked as emergency medical practitioner at Highveld Mediclinic for 10 years. During this time, she also worked in a general practice in Secunda. In 2012 she moved to Uniondale hospital where she worked as medical officer and the primary health care manager for the clinics in the area.

With this wide spectrum of valuable experience behind her, she decided to start a private practice in Still Bay in 2015.

Dr. Patricia Oosthuizen

Coming from a family of dedicated medical professionals, Dr. Patricia Oosthuizen developed a deep interest in medicine from an early age. She earned her MBChB degree from Stellenbosch University in 2021 and went on to complete her internship at Tygerberg Academic Hospital, gaining valuable clinical experience across various disciplines.

In 2024, Dr. Oosthuizen fulfilled her community service at Tshepong Hospital in Klerksdorp, where she served in the surgical department. During this period, she honed her skills in performing surgical procedures and managing patients with complex medical conditions, including severe burn injuries. It was through this hands-on experience that her passion for breast and endocrine surgery truly emerged, shaping the direction of her future medical career.

Johan Uys Physiotherapist at Stilbaai Medies

The Physiotherapist, Johan Uys, also has his consulting room in the Stilbaai Medies building. He provides assessment and treatment of sport and musculoskeletal injuries as well as orthopaedic conditions. As an avid sport enthusiast, he advocates exercise and movement and also believes that prevention is better than cure.

Qualifications

Johan graduated from the University of the Western Cape in 2005 with a Bachelors degree in Physiotherapy with Honours. In 2006 he completed the postgraduate Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapy (OMT 1) certification through the Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapy Group of the South African Society of Physiotherapy. Under the mentor-ship of Geoff Foat, he has furthered his education in the Mulligan Concept. Consequently, in 2014 he achieved international accreditation as a Certified Mulligan Practitioner – the first in South Africa!

Experience and Interests

Johan has experience in a variety of orthopaedic outpatient as well as hospital settings and has worked throughout South Africa since qualifying. An avid sports enthusiast, Johan enjoys running, cycling and also horse riding. His passion for sport extends to working at various sporting events. This includes the Cape Argus Cycle Tour, which he has also completed several times, the Comrades Marathon and also the Two Oceans Marathon. He also has a unique interest in Animal Physiotherapy, specifically in Equine Physiotherapy.

Stilbaai Medies is ‘n private algemene mediese praktyk met twee ervare huisdokters. Gelisensieerd om algemene gesondheidsorg in Stilbaai en omgewing te beoefen, is die praktyk oop vir alle plaaslike inwoners, besoekers, vakansiegangers en so meer.

Dr. Patricia Oosthuizen

Dr. Patricia Oosthuizen kom uit ’n familie van toegewyde mediese praktisyns, en haar belangstelling in geneeskunde het reeds op ’n jong ouderdom begin.
