Second-hand Book and Coffee Bar in Still Bay. Bookworm book exchange offers a variety of 2nd hand books, fiction as well as non-fiction, magazines and DVDs. The owner, Veda, also produces the most appealing and inspiring watercolour paintings and hand-crafted greeting cards which she sells in the shop. Enjoy a cup of tea or coffee with a rusk or two, or some cold juice as well as the lovely view from her shop while reading or simply admiring the peaceful ambience.

The Bookworm used-books bookshop has been around for more than 10 years and is located in the Kothuis Building next to Cottonfields in Still Bay. One of the shops along the service road running parallel with Main Road West from Steyn’s Building Supplies up to Verandah. Still Bay is a popular coastal town in the Western Cape, South Africa as well as an equally popular holiday destination.

Apart from being an artist, Veda is also a very well-read individual, completely bilingual, (English and Afrikaans) and she knows exactly what is in her stock. Being an avid reader herself, she is, of course very knowledgeable about books and the published world. For this very reason, she is a very interesting person to talk to. Among many a hidden gem in this bookshop, this is the place where the true bookworm feels happy and safe.

Books in Bookworm Bookshop and Coffee Bar

Bookworm specialises in pre-owned books, fiction as well as non-fiction. These books are mostly in English, although there are some in Afrikaans and even a few in German and Dutch. The language of the books depends of course on donations made to the shop as well as what can be sourced from sources in Cape Town.

There are some hidden gems in this shop which may be a little damaged by fish-moths or have discoloured with time, but are still intact and completely readable. These books are mostly out of print and only available as second-hand copies, in many cases priceless.

The most important categories are:

  • Art – small selection
  • Children’s books
  • Classics
  • Cookery
  • DIY books and interior decorating
  • Ecology such as wildlife, birds and plants
  • Esoteric books which are books intended for only a small number of people with a specialised knowledge or interest.
  • Gardening
  • Hand-craft such as quilting, embroidery, knitting and sewing
  • Health, fitness and also natural remedies
  • Inspirational as well as devotional books
  • Literary works such as plays, poetry and also writing skills
  • Pets

The second-hand magazines sell at R2 each.

The prices of the books are extremely reasonable. Veda also offers a 40% credit to clients bringing books back to the shop after having read the book. Many customers are only too grateful to be able to ‘get rid’ of the book once he/she has read it. She will also watch out for a specific title or author you are interested in and inform you when it becomes available.

Please note: Payment can be done in cash only since there are no card facilities available in Bookworm Bookshop and Coffee Bar.

Bookworm Coffee Bar

There is also tea and coffee with a rusk (or two) as well as cold juice available. The tables are placed along the front window with a view of the sea and out of the wind. And, of course among your most favourite things – books, books, books.

Veda, the Artist

This very gifted person also paints on the side. She mostly uses watercolours as medium, although she sometimes works with other media, like oil paint as well. Her exquisite unframed paintings are unpretentiously displayed around the shop, some on the wall, others on the sides of the shelves. Because of their unframed state, they have the appearance of merely pieces of paper. Once you notice them, though, and look at them carefully, they start working their magic.

Each of her paintings is special and irresistibly charming. Sometimes she paints on sheet music creating an interesting and delightful dimension to the picture. You have to see her work for yourself – there is a beguiling appeal to them, you will simply want them all.

Furthermore Veda paints these pretty little pictures which she uses to make blank greeting cards. Thus, each of her greeting cards is a Veda Original – precious and each one worth framing as well.

Bookworm Koffiekroeg
