Goukou River
Goukou River
Goukou River
The beautiful Goukou River runs through Still Bay and allows for swimming, boating, angling, cob fishing, canoeing, water-skiing – in short, every kind of water-related activity.
The Goukou River in the Western Cape is a tidal river that flows into the Indian Ocean at Still Bay and is navigable for up to 15km inland.
The river is now also part of a marine reserve. In either case you may fish and collect bait in specific areas.
Goukou River Activities
A popular fishing area is the Goukou Estuary itself. The river literally swarms with fish like sea bream, and cob, as a matter of fact all sorts of freshwater fish, in summary, a fisherman’s paradise. Bait organisms abound in the estuary and bait collection is an essential part of angling.
For boating there are public launching ramps on the east and west banks of the estuary about 2km upstream from the mouth. The river is popular for sailing, swimming and boating. Look out for the sign posts on the side of the river indicating to which areas water-skiing and motor boats are restricted. Jet-skis and jet-propelled craft are not permitted on the estuary.
Hire a canoe or kayak, rubber-duck or paddle-boat during the December holidays.
The considerable stretch of sand on the eastern side of the river mouth is extremely popular for safe swimming with smaller children, sunbathing, and even flying kites.
Hikers will find safe routes for walking or bicycling developed along the river. Bird watchers can enjoy some bird-watching. Bird life includes sand pipers, seagulls and other sea birds, cranes and many other birds species.
Goukourivier in Stilbaai
